The start point for the best source of fleet information

Fleet registrations up by 9% in April, says SMMT

New fleet car registrations rose by 9% in April compared to April 2014 to 93,095 registrations, according to the latest Society of Motor Manufacturer and Traders figures.

Meanwhile, the SMMT said April was the 38th consecutive month of growth. Overall total registrations rose by 5.1% to 185,778 units, which the SMMT said was the month's best performance since 2005.

Year-to-date, registrations for 2015 are up by 6.4% to 920,366 cars. The SMMT claimed that all but three of the last nine general elections have coincided with a spike in new car demand in the three months before and after polling day.

The Ford Fiesta once again topped the best sellers list with 10,294 registrations during the month, followed by the Ford Focus (6347) and Volkswagen's Golf (5354 registrations).

"Today's figures highlight the current strength of consumer confidence, even at a time of such political uncertainty," said Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive. "We are confident that the UK's new car market - so symbolic of economic mood - will continue to thrive, but long-term success will depend largely on economic and political stability in the months and years ahead."

Hawes said the next Government needs to act quickly to uphold economic certainty and reassure consumers and markets.

"The industry is still talking a strong story with consumer and fleet sales driving home good growth for April. Manufacturers continue to offer tempting deals, so as long as consumers aren't distracted by today's General Election we can hope for a similar story at the end of May," said Richard Lowe, head of retail & wholesale at Barclays.
