Fleets driving new car registration growth in July, says SMMT

New car registrations grew for the 41st consecutive month in July, with fleets accounting for most of the increase, the latest Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders figures have revealed.

Fleet registrations grew by 6.4% to 94,359 vehicles compared with July 2014's figure of 88,680 units.

Meanwhile, private car sales grew by 1.0% to 77,500 units.

Year-to-date, the fleet market has grown by 12.3% to 779,547 registrations. So far this year, private sales have accounted for 714,479 new car registrations.

Overall, 178,420 cars were registered in July, an uplift of 3.2% compared with this time last year. The SMMT has once again put the growth down to prevailing economic confidence and low interest rates.

The SMMT said demand for superminis has grown by 22.7% since 2005, a result of consumers downsizing to smaller cars compared to 10 years ago.

Once again, the best-selling car of the month was the Ford Fiesta, with 8504 registrations, while the Ford Focus comes second with 7044 registrations.

"While more moderate than in recent months, July's rise in new car registrations is good news, and indicative of what we expect for the remainder of 2015," said Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive. "With demand having reached a record high in the first half of the year, we anticipate more stable growth in the coming months."
