New fleet car registrations in the UK grew by 13.1% in the first half of 2015, the latest Society of Motor Manufactures and Traders figures has revealed.

Overall, the new car registration market grew by 7.0% compared to 2014's total. A record number of new cars - 1,370,889 -  were registered between January and June, higher than the previous record of 1,376,565 vehicles, set in the same period in 2004.

The SMMT said low interest rates and attractive finance deals have continued to encourage people to buy new cars.

June marked the 40th month of growth in the market with a 12.9% increase compared to 2014 to 257,817 units, while registrations for alternatively-fueled vehicles increasing by 70.9%.

Fleet registrations grew by 18.9% last month compared to June 2014.

Year-to-date, the most popular vehicle in terms of registrations is the Ford Fiesta with 71,990 vehicles being registered between January and June, while the Vauxhall Corsa is second with 50,125 registrations.

"It is still a great time to buy a new car in the UK," said Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, who predicted the record figures may continue. "We anticipate a flatter second half of the year as the market finds its natural running rate."
