Geneva motor show 2015: Top five concepts

Date: 05 March 2015

Paul Barker, Tom Seymour and Tristan Young take a look at the top five concepts revealed in Switzerland.

1 Audi1. Audi Prologue Avant

Audi describes its Prologue Avant as a signpost to the direction of its larger cars, with the new A6, A7 and A8 on the horizon.

Why is it interesting?

The concept has the same powertrain as the new Q7 E-tron plug-in model, which hints at a plug-in version of new A6, A7 and A8 vehicles when they launch by the end of 2017.

When is it on sale?

It will influence the A8 first, which launches in 2017.

Any other business?

This version follows the Prologue Coupe revealed earlier this year, and specifically drops hints about the A6 Avant having a curvier look than the current model.

2 VW Sport Coupe Concept GTE2. Volkswagen Sport Coupe Concept GTE

A peek into the future from Volkswagen, primarily to hint at the next CC.

Why is it interesting?

The current second-generation CC has been a hit with fleets, offering a more stylish version of the Passat, for a little more money, that doesn't sacrifice practicality or emissions.

When is it on sale?

As the new CC it's likely to be in 2016.

Any other business?

The concept is all-wheel drive and uses VW's plug-in GTE technology, employing two electric motors alongside a petrol engine.

3 Mitsubishi Concept XR PHEV II 203293. Mitsubishi XR PHEV

The Mitsubishi XR PHEV is a small SUV and is understood to be close in design to the next-generation ASX.

Why is it interesting?

The concept uses a more advanced version of the plug-in hybrid system first seen in the Outlander 4x4. As such, the production version should return a CO2 figure of less than 40g/km.

When is it on sale?

That production car is due in 2017.

Any other business?

The XR PHEV will be available in both front-drive and 4WD guises. Mitsubishi hopes to replicate the success of the Outlander, which has sold 10,000 units in the UK in its first 12 months.

4 SEAT 20V20 Concept 204334. Seat 20V20

Seat is finally building up to launching into the massive and rapidly growing small SUV market, and this 20V20, which stands for Vision 2020, is the first step.

Why is it interesting?

UK bosses hope it will build into a range of crossover models.

When is it on sale?

Elements will appear in the first SUV coming next year.

Any other business?

Seat says the concept can accommodate petrol, diesel or plug-in hybrid powertrains, hinting that the Spanish brand could employ parent firm VW's electric technology. Four-wheel drive is also available, and the concept gets the DSG automatic gearbox.

5 Kia SPORTSPACE Concept 202825. Kia Sportspace

This is Kia's take on what could be a new Optima estate. The idea is that a production model would be a sportier version of a standard estate for customers who want more practicality, but still want something that looks good.

Why is it interesting?

Kia hasn't had an estate in the upper medium sector before and it's essential for the fleet market. Estates account for two thirds of upper medium sales to fleets, so having a model will help the brand compete.

When is it on sale?

It hasn't been confirmed for production, but it has been strongly suggested that a road-going version is already under development. A new Optima saloon will come in Q4 this year, so an estate will surely follow in 2016.

Any other business?

The concept is fitted with a rather potent 250hp 2.0-litre turbo petrol to go with its sporty credentials, while a production version will likely feature a diesel for the UK market. Kia has also hinted that a mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid will come to fruition.
