The start point for the best source of fleet information

HMRC trials car benefit website

Date: 20 February 2015

HM Revenue & Customs has launched a new "public beta test" website to enable drivers to make changes to car and fuel benefits that affect their tax code.

At present, employees need to phone HMRC, which receives around 4.3 million calls per year, but the new site, which launched earlier this month, is initially intended to help reduce that number, before eventually also cutting the seven-day time it takes for tax code changes to be implemented.

The move affects people whose employers don't incorporate the car and fuel benefits into payroll, as these already ensure the right tax is being paid in real time. If it's not on the payroll, then that's where people currently need to phone HMRC with any car or fuel benefit changes, and these are the people the new online platform is aimed at.

"In order to come out of public beta, we have to show the user experience is good enough," explained an HMRC spokesman, who said users can leave feedback to help improve the site. The website can be found at www.gov.uk/companycartax.
