Hybrid and plug-in hybrid Kia Optima models to arrive in 2016

Date: 17 November 2015   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Kia has confirmed that its new Optima upper medium model will be available in hybrid and plug-in hybrid form within the next year.

The 'PHEV' plug-in hybrid will be powered by a 50kWh electric motor, which will allow the car to travel up to 27 miles on electric power alone. It will be mated to 156hp 2.0-litre petrol engine.

According to Kia, the Optima PHEV is expected to return 119mpg. While a CO2 figure hasn't been revealed yet, Paul Philpott, Kia UK's president told BusinessCar that it is targetting a sub-50g/km CO2 figure - which would place this Optima into the 2016-17 7% BIK band.

Meanwhile, the Optima hybrid will be powered by the same 156hp 2.0-litre petrol unit mated to a 38kWh electric motor. Kia has not revealed any efficiency figures for this model yet.

Kia also announced it is planning to improve its average fuel efficiency figure by 25% thanks to investments in green technology such as hybrid, plug-in hybrid and hydrogen powertrains, along with upgrades to its existing line-up of petrol and diesel engines.
