ICFM conference: Diesel duty rises predicted

Date: 18 November 2015   |   Author:

Diesel could be headed for a fuel duty increase in the Autumn Statement and Spending Review on 25 November, according to campaign group Fairfuel UK.

"On the table is that fuel duty comes down by a penny but diesel goes up by 2p," Fairfuel UK founder Howard Cox told the ICFM conference late last month. "Because of the VW issue, Government could put up duty some way on 'dirty' diesels - that's the message I'm getting.

"We want to convince Government to take this tax and use it to encourage growth opportunities, not just pay off the deficit," he continued, while also slamming road users for just accepting increased taxation without dissent: "Eight weeks before the Budget [chancellor George] Osborne sits down with his team and asks what tax rises he can get away with, and 37 million pussycats who drive cars just take it."
