Just over half of drivers against paper counterpart abolition, says Motorpoint

Just over half of all drivers are against the Government's decision to scrap the paper counte.rpart, according to car supermarket Motorpoint.
An online poll conducted by the firm on its website found that 53.1% of the 1000 surveyed didn't want the paper counterpart to be replaced by the online service.
The paper-based counterpart driving licence showing a driver's record, including offences and endorsements, was replaced by an online service from 8 June in a bid to save motorists millions of pounds.
Last year 445,000 paper-based driving counterpart licences were lost for which motorists were charged £20 each to cover the cost of replacement, according to the DVLA.
Any paper-based driving licence issued before the photocard was introduced in 1998 remains valid.
When the service launched, several users were unable to access the tool for at least a day, due to initial teeing problems leading the BVRLA to claim the abolition of the paper counterpart was rushed.
"Although the changes announced by the Government have caused some initial confusion over the medium to long term the new system once it has settled down should prove to be more efficient as well as cost effective for drivers," said Mark Carpenter, managing director of Motorpoint.
