Kia reveals new engine, trim level and gearbox for Ceed

Kia has revealed a new engine, dual clutch transmission and sporty trim level for its lower medium Ceed ahead of the debuts at the Geneva motor show next month.

The Korean car maker has developed a new 1.0-litre petrol engine. It said the unit is the first of the company's upcoming range of downsized engines in Europe.

No CO2 or fuel figures are available yet, but Kia said its engineers have aimed for a 10-15% improvement in fuel efficiency compared to the current 1.6-litre petrol unit.

The engine will make its debut in the Kia Ceed GT Line model, which is due on sale in Q4 of 2015. Kia said the new trim level combines sporty looks with the versatility of the conventional Ceed.

It features LED daytime running lights, deeper bumpers, twin exhausts, 17-inch alloys and a new grey, white and black upholstery. No prices have been announced, but expect it to be announced nearer to the launch.

The new engine will be mated to a new seven-speed dual clutch transmission. Kia said it would offer faster gear changes than a traditional torque converter gearbox. The new transmission is expected to cut emissions and improve fuel economy too.
