The Suzuki Vitara has been awarded the maximum five stars in the latest Euro NCAP tests.

The crash-testing body praised it for its child safety rating. The minimum level to attain five stars is 75%, but the Japanese vehicle achieved 85% in the test.

The firm's Total Effective Control Technology system was also praised by Euro NCAP, while it picked up points for its autonomous braking system.

Fiat's 500X small MPV and the Mazda 2 supermini were awarded four stars each. Euro NCAP said the 500X scored a 64% rating in the safety assist feature because the optional autonomous braking system is not expected to be fitted to many cars.

The Mazda 2 achieved the same result in the same test because there are no high-speed autonomous braking systems available.
