The new car market recorded its 42nd month of consecutive growth in August, according to figures from the Society of Motor Manufactures and Traders.

Overall, new car registrations increased by 9.6% to 79,060 units, taking year-on-year growth to 6.7%.

Fleet registrations during the month were up by 11.8% to 40,184 vehicles, with the year-on-year figure increasing by 12.2% to 819,754 units.

Once again, the Ford Fiesta topped the best-selling car list, with 4753 registrations during August. This was followed by the Ford Focus (2673) and VW Golf (2456).

"August's strong performance has again been driven by attractive finance deals and a diverse range of technologically advanced models," said Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive.

"Britain's budget-conscious buyers are taking advantage of low regular monthly payments that provide certainty and affordability and with September's new 65-plate now in full swing, we expect UK showrooms to be as busy as ever," he added.
