New Year sparks supermarket fuel war

UPDATE 12/1/2014: Morrisons has annouced it is reducing the price of fuel by up to 2p-per-litre from tomorrow morning (13 January).
The 'big four' UK supermarkets have once again cut the price of fuel at the pumps, following the falling oil prices.
Asda dropped its national price cap - meaning the price of fuel is the same at all of its 245 filling stations - on 31 December by two pence for both petrol and diesel to 107.7ppl on unleaded and 114.7ppl on diesel.
The retailer said these prices are the lowest since the summer of 2010, and over the past four months the company has cut the price of fuel 13 times, with the price for unleaded falling by 19ppl and diesel 15ppl.
"We're pleased to be giving drivers some early New Year savings. No matter where customers live, they will benefit from the same fuel price with our national price cap of 107.7ppl for unleaded and 114.7ppl for diesel," said Andy Peake, Asda's petrol trading director.
Tesco dropped its prices for both unleaded and diesel by 2ppl on New Year's Eve, and is cutting the price of both fuels by 2ppl from this afternoon (5 January).
The supermarket said the new prices will come into effect at all of its 500 filling stations, which it claims is the largest of all UK supermarkets.
"We're dropping the cost of petrol by 2ppl and diesel by 2ppl at all of our 500 filling stations. That's on top of the 6p per litre average saving on petrol that ClubCard customers are currently getting thanks to our Fuel Save scheme. It means ClubCard customers can get the lowest price for petrol in the UK," said Peter Cattel, fuel director for Tesco said.
Arch-rival Sainsbury's cut the price of petrol and diesel by "up to two pence a litre" at its 298 forecourts from 1 January. The supermaket said it was the sixth time in five weeks that it had cut the price of fuel.
Morrisons said it is also slashing the price of fuel by up to 2ppl for both unleaded and diesel across its network of 332 stations from tomorrow (6 January). The chain said this is the seventh time it has cut the price of fuel since the start of December.
"It's great to be able to see out the old and start the New Year by passing on further wholesale price drops to our customers," said Mark Todd, petrol director for Morrisons.
