The start point for the best source of fleet information

Petrol VW Passat not ruled out

Date: 29 January 2015

Volkswagen is not ruling out adding petrol models to its new Passat range, even though the new upper medium model is launching with a diesel-only line-up.

"We would be able to do it in about 12 weeks if we saw a change," Passat product marketing manager Sally-Anne Norris told BusinessCar, predicting that the General Election could result in a change in buying attitudes or legislation.

Going diesel-only is fuelled by the car's corporate orientation. "It's such a fleet car, and it's all
about BIK," she continued. "In the past, even with quite strong offers on petrol Passat, there has still been demand for diesel."

Norris said that Volkswagen wanted to make the new Passat as easy as possible to digest on choice lists, hence there being five trim levels, four engines and two transmission options.

The estate Passat has been dominant in the previous iteration of the car, with 11,000 sold against 8500 saloons, but that is expected to come back to around equal with the new model.

"It's a more premium proposition, and with the proportions it's a much stronger-looking car, so it brings the saloon back up," Norris explained.

The range will be expanded with a Bluemotion version in July, expected to hit 95g/km, as well as a raised off-roader Alltrack a month later. The plug-in GTE will follow in the third quarter, with an expected 40g/km.
