Phone choice could shape future car purchases, says Glass's

Future car products will integrate more closely with smartphone technology

Smartphone choice could soon be dictating future car purchases as new models are becoming more integrated with smartphone operating systems, according to Glass's.

The vehicle valuations expert said car makers are working with Apple and Google on next-generation systems that will see smartphones, tablets and cars integrating more closely, giving drivers more access to information and apps.

Glass's said smartphone and tablet technology is integral to the lives of younger car buyers, and car makers are working on offering smartphone-like functions to help target their products towards a younger audience, but a wrong move could affect future cars' residual values.

"These are difficult decisions for car manufacturers to take over the next few years. Backing the wrong horse could see their models become not just less attractive to a growing group of buyers but also see their residual values hit," said Rupert Pontin, head of valuations at Glass's.

"Unless compromises are made over the operating systems being installed in vehicles to encourage something approaching universal compatibility, some manufacturers and owners will inevitably lose out."

Glass's suggests manufacturers could offer the latest smartphone handsets to customers as part of their new car purchase, wrapped up into one monthly payment.

However, this does not overcome the personal choice that many people have taken already in relation to loyalty towards existing equipment and operating systems.
