Reducing fuel costs and stopping fraud top fleet managers bugbear list

New research has revealed that fleet managers are facing increasing challenges when it comes to managing expenses.

According to findings from Barclaycard Fuel+ and mileage expense experts The Miles Consultancy, the vast majority of fleet managers are using outdated pay and reclaim systems, which do not address issues such as rising fuel claim costs.

The survey suggested that a third of fleet managers are struggling to reduce their overall fuel costs, while less than half of fleet managers are able to capture data that allows them to review spending.

Meanwhile, only one in five (19%) use fuel cards in their management activity, while 57% use a system which allows them to monitor miles driven or total fuel costs (56%).

Fleet managers also identified other areas of concern, with 31% citing fraud as their main issue, typically claiming back too much for fuel.

However, only half of transport managers are equipped with fuel purchasing systems that allow them to monitor fraud, while 30% can detect whether a second car is being filled up, while just over a third (35% and 36% respectively) said they can check validity of a business journey, and the accuracy of distances claimed.

"Our research brings home not only the great number of challenges facing fleet managers today but also highlights the limitations of traditional fuel management systems to meet these changing demands. A more holistic approach to fuel management is clearly needed," said John Bostock, account development director at Barclaycard.
