Roads minister calls for stealth camera review

Date: 09 February 2015   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Roads minister John Hayes has called for a review for both the colour and signposting of 'stealth' speed cameras on the M25 amid concerns motorists can't see them.

The cameras are currently used on the M25 and will be deployed along sections of smart motorways to enforce speed limits when the hard shoulder is used as an additional lane.

The Highways Agency said the cameras will be positioned on sections of smart motorway over the next two years, including the M1, M6 and M3.

Currently, the cameras are painted grey - unlike yellow, as seen around roadworks - and have caught more than 600 speeding motorists in two months, The Telegraph said.

"I have been concerned about "stealth cameras" and have ordered a review as a matter of priority to look at exactly where they are, what they are being used for and how they are signed. That includes the colour of them," John Hayes, roads minister told The Telegraph.

"It seems to me that it is important that they are identifiable. At the moment as you know people assume that speed cameras are painted yellow. I think it's really important that people know where speed cameras are. The suggestion that stealth is involved is not reasonable," said Hayes.

A Highways Agency spokesman confirmed to BusinessCar that the organisation is responding to the review: "The HA has been asked to look into both the colour and placement, and the work is ongoing," he said.
