September marks 43rd consecutive month of growth for car industry

More than 460,000 new cars were registered last month, making it the most successful September on record in terms of registrations, Society of Motor Manufactures and Traders figures have revealed.
According to the SMMT, 462,517 cars were registered during the month, making it the 43rd consecutive month of growth, and signifying an 8.6% increase on September 2014's figures.
Fleets once again drove most of the growth, with company car registrations increasing by 15.2% compared to September 2014's figure of 180,268 units hitting 207,702 units.
Private sales however only increased by 3.0% compared to 12 months ago.
Once again, the Ford Fiesta was the best-selling car of the month, with 22,807 registrations in September. However, the Vauxhall Corsa displaced the Ford Focus from second place in the charts.
Despite the current Volkswagen emissions scandal, both the Golf and Polo remained in the top 10, at 4th and 5th respectively.
"September is traditionally one of the year's biggest months for new car registrations, and last month set an autumn record," said Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive.
"With plenty of attractive, affordable deals available on the new 65-plate, Britain's car buyers - whether private, fleet or business consumers - were busier than ever."
He added: "The market reached pre-recession levels some time ago, and we anticipate some leveling off in the coming months. It is too early to draw conclusions, but customer demand for diesel remained strong, accounting for one in two cars registered."
