Smart introduces new Fortwo Cabrio

Date: 01 September 2015   |   Author:

Smart has taken the wraps off the new Fortwo Cabrio, following the introduction of the revised Fortwo Coupe two-seater earlier this year.

Sharing the donor car's diminutive dimensions, the new model measures in at just 2.69m and will make its debut later this month at the Frankfurt motor show.

Available with two petrol engines - a 71hp 1.0-litre unit and a 99hp turbocharged 0.9-litre engine - all Smarts should be VED exempt under the current system, emitting 99g/km of CO2 and returning 65.7mpg. Both are also available with the option of manual and automatic gearboxes.

The new model features an electric canvas roof with a folding soft top and removable roof bars - that can be stowed in a compartment in the boot - which folds in 12 seconds, making it the only true convertible in the class, Smart claims. Unusually for a convertible, the Smart Cabrio's roof can be operated top speed and by using a button on the keyfob.

Thanks to its increased size of the roof panel that retracts, the new Smart Cabrio should give drivers an even greater wind-in-the-hair experience. Several roof materials are available including a blue denim jeans-style material.

Three trim levels are available - passion, prime and proxy, with a range of big-car features available including smarthphone integration with the MirrorLink media system.

Available to order from mid-November, the new Smart will arrive in dealers in February 2016.
