SMEs account for almost a third of the UK's rental market, data from a new study has revealed.
According to the report produced by rental company Avis, businesses that employ one to 50 people make up 30% of the rental scene.
Meanwhile, large organisations are the most frequent users of rental vehicles, making up 48% of bookings.
According to Avis, the most frequent users of car rental services were made up of the manufacturing (11%), education (10%) and information technology (8%) sectors.
The study - which was conducted in partnership with the Guild of Travel Management Companies - also revealed that the majority of rentals in the UK were for short periods (one to seven days) with 24% of rentals in the UK and 37% of rentals abroad having a duration of more than eight days.
The majority of respondents choose a rental company based on price, with 67% of respondents saying that the cost of renting a vehicle was 'very important', while 24/7 emergency assistance (60%), speed of service (58%) and the ability to book online (51%) were all also considered to be very important to business travelers.
"Even within a stable economic market, price will always be a driving factor, but it is fascinating to see the value placed on convenience by the UK's business travelling community," said Louisa Bell, commercial director, Avis UK.
Bell continued: "Whether on the move within the UK or overseas, customers are clearly looking for minimum impact on their work commitments and anything from waiting in a line or making a lengthy call to arrange a reservation can be a deal breaker."
