SMMT: emissions scandal not an industry-wide issue

Date: 23 September 2015   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

The Society of Motor Manufactures and Traders has suggested that the current Volkswagen diesel emissions scandal isn't an industry-wide issue.

"This is an issue affecting just one company and there is no evidence to suggest that any other company is involved," the industry body said in a statement.

The SMMT also pointed out that the European emissions tests are independently witnessed by Government-appointed agencies, unlike the American testing procedure, however it conceded the current system is flawed.

"The industry accepts that the current test method for cars is out of date and is seeking agreement from the European Commission for a new emissions test that embraces new testing technologies and which is more representative of on-road conditions," the SMMT added.
