TfL and IAM honoured in European road safety awards

Transport for London and the Institute of Advanced Motorists have won awards recognising their efforts to improve road safety at a European level.

The European Transport Safety Council (ETSC)'s Praise awards gave TfL the Public Authority Award, while the IAM won the Small and Medium-sized Enterprise award.

TfL was praised for reporting and investigating all collisions, incidents and near-misses, its logistics and freight operator recognition schemes and for risk assessing all 3820 of its drivers.

Meanwhile, the IAM's company car policy, which requires vehicles to have a five-star Euro NCAP rating was recognised, as was its annual targets to reduce the number of collisions on the roads.

"Road safety is everyone's business. But organisations, large and small, have a pivotal role to play by putting road safety considerations at the heart of their operations," said Antonio Avenoso, executive director of the ETSC.

"The companies and organisations we are recognising today are driving the change with initiatives that reduce collisions, prevent injuries and also help the bottom line," he added.

The ETSC estimates that in Europe six out of 10 work accidents resulting in death are road crashes, including both crashes while driving for work and commuting, while the Department for Transport's travel survey data shows that people who drive for work are up to 40% more likely to be involved in a collision than those who do not drive for work.
