Toyota expects to sell 20 Mirai fuel-cell cars in UK in 2015

Date: 16 January 2015   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Toyota has revealed it has amassed 1500 orders for its hydrogen-powered Mirai in Japan during its first month on sale - but expects to sell 20 cars when it arrives in the UK later this year.

A spokesman for Toyota GB told BusinessCar the lower volume expectations for the UK were down to the current lack of infrastructure at present. He said: "The car will mainly be aimed at London-based businesses."

The spokesman said he expects the Mirai to sell "thousands" in the US and Japan thanks to the steep discounts and incentives being offered, while the car will sell in the tens in Europe.

Toyota revealed the Mirai last November.

The Japanese car maker said it had anticipated 400 sales by the end of the year in its homeland.

In Japan, Toyota said that due to the large volume of orders, some customers will experience longer waits for delivery than expected. The firm said so far, 60% of the orders have been with Government / fleet customers.
