The start point for the best source of fleet information

Vast majority of fleets are excited about new car tech, says BVRLA

The vast majority of fleets are excited about the changes new technology could bring to the rental sector, the BVRLA has said.

According to the latest BVRLA Fleet Survey, 97% of fleets are looking forward to the changes, but 58% have said it is difficult to quantify the benefits of new technology at present.

The survey collected the views of more than 150 fleet managers, rental operators and leasing companies. One third (34%) said they are early adopters of new vehicle technology, while 58% said they will wait until they can see a clear return on investment.

Respondents to the survey also said that in 2020 autonomous emergency braking and in-car video would be the most important safety technologies for fleets.

Meanwhile, the BVRLA is calling for the Government to take a more active role in promoting the systems, after new official figures revealed that casualties on the roads increased in 2014.

"Motor insurers and safety assessors have recognised the importance of AEB, as has the fleet industry," said BVRLA chief executive, Gerry Keaney. "It is now time for the government to take a lead by mandating the use of AEB-equipped cars across its own fleet and promoting wider uptake through the use of tax and other incentives.

"A progressive tax regime has helped the fleet sector achieve huge cuts in CO2 emissions. With the right support it could deliver similar reductions in the number of people killed or injured in road accidents," said Keaney.

The results of the survey were announced at the association's second annual Fleet Technology Congress, held at the Williams F1 Conference Centre in Grove, Oxfordshire on 1 July. For a full report of the congress, see the 14 July issue of BusinessCar.
