Vauxhall to recall 220,000 Zafiras after dashboard fires alert

Date: 06 November 2015   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Vauxhall will recall 220,000 Zafira people carrier models after owners reported fires breaking out in the dashboard on social media last month.

The issue relates to the second-generation Zafira's heating and ventilation system.

The current Zafira Tourer Mk3 model is unaffected.

Around 280,000 Mk2 models were sold in the UK. Vauxhall said an investigation found that a number of incidents happened due to possible irregularities with the blower motor resistor and thermal fuse.

However, the car maker said the problem only appears when repairs are being performed incorrectly or using non-genuine parts.

The company said it would write to owners of affected vehicles, requesting them to go to a dealership from 12 November.

"If you are the first owner and your system is functioning well, there should be no risk," said Rory Harvey, managing director of Vauxhall.

"We will check all components and replace any suspect parts free of charge," he added. "If a part is not available then we will consider the onward mobility requirements of the customer."

"We are very sorry that this situation has arisen. Safety is our key priority. We have been investigating this issue with the utmost priority."
