Volvo announces electrification plan

Date: 15 October 2015   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Volvo has announced that plug-in hybrid vehicles will be introduced across its range.

The Swedish car maker also said it will develop a new range of smaller electric cars and build a fully electric car for sale by 2019.

The first element of the company's plan involves the introduction of plug-in hybrid versions of its 90 and 60 series vehicles. The XC90 4x4 already has a plug-in hybrid version available; the T8 twin engine.

Volvo said this would be followed by a range of 40-series vehicles and the brand-new electric vehicle.

"We believe that the time has come for electrified cars to cease being a niche technology and enter the mainstream. We are confident that in two years' time, 10 per cent of Volvo's global sales will be electrified cars," said Hakan Samuelsson, CEO of Volvo.
