VW boss confirms 400,000 UK cars need to be re-engineered following scandal

Around 400,000 Volkswagen Group vehicles in the UK fitted with the company's Euro 5 1.6-litre diesel engine will need to be fitted with new fuel injectors as well as a software fix, the firm's UK boss has said.
Paul Willis, Volkswagen's managing director, added that vehicles fitted with the larger 2.0-litre engine would only need a software fix.
Speaking to the Commons Transport select committee, he apologised "sincerely and unreservedly" for letting down customers.
"Volkswagen has significantly let down its customers and the wider public. We recognise we've fallen short of the standards expected and we will take all the necessary steps to regain trust," he added.
Willis also confirmed that recalls of affected vehicles would start in the first quarter of 2016, and that owners who may be inconvenienced by not having a vehicle during the recall process would be given a loan car.
Transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin said the scandal would cause Volkswagen "very substantial damage", while he added that he was satisfied other car makers have not used similar software to evade emissions tests.
