VW emissions scandal: EA288 engine could contain defeat device

Date: 22 October 2015   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Volkswagen is investigating whether another batch of its diesel engines contain the now-infamous defeat device, used to manipulate emissions test data.

The German vehicle giant is looking into whether software was installed in its EA288 Euro 5 diesel engine.

According to German media, the unit - which is derived from the EA189 engine that's been at the centre of the emissions storm - is under scrutiny by the firm's engineers to work out the full extent of the issue.

It is understood that current Euro 6 versions of the engine are not affected by the latest revelations.

Just under 1.2 million UK vehicles are currently affected by the emissions scandal, however, it is unclear how many vehicles could be affected if the EA288 engine is deemed to contain the software.
