VW emissions scandal: European models affected

Date: 24 September 2015   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Germany's transport minister, Alexander Dobrindt, has confirmed that European models are affected by the ongoing Volkswagen emissions scandal.

Previously, VW said 11 million cars  were affected worldwide, but Dobrindt said he does not know how many European vehicles are concerned.

"We have been informed that also in Europe, vehicles with 1.6 and 2.0-litre diesel engines are affected by the manipulations that are being talked about," he told Sky News.

He also said that cars from others manufacturers would be checked: "It is clear that the Federal Office for Motor Traffic will not exclusively concentrate on the VW models in question but that it will also carry out random tests on vehicles made by other carmakers."

Yesterday evening, Martin Winterkorn, VW's CEO stepped down from his role, with the group's board of directors saying a replacement would not be appointed until this Friday at the earliest.
