VW emissions scandal: No VED changes for cars fitted with defeat devices

The Government has confirmed that drivers of Volkswagens fitted with the infamous 'defeat device' will not incur higher VED rates, as a result of emissions that could be higher than claimed.
Following on from Volkswagen's admission, last week the Government announced an emissions probe.
The Department for Transport confirmed that the next phase of its investigation will assess whether other manufacturers have used the illegal software to cheat emissions tests.
The investigation will include real-world and lab testing by the Vehicle Certification Agency, the Government added.
"Our priority is to protect the public and give them full confidence in diesel tests," said transport secretary, Patrick McLoughlin. "The Government expects VW to support owners of these vehicles already purchased in the UK and we are playing our part by ensuring no one will end up with higher tax costs as a result of this scandal."
He added: "I have been pressing for action at an EU-level to improve emissions tests and will continue to do so. I have also called for a Europe-wide investigation into the use of 'defeat devices', in parallel to the work we are doing in the UK."
