BMW 530e PHEV due in UK from March

Date: 21 December 2016   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Further details of the plug-in hybrid version of the new BMW 5-series executive saloon have been revealed ahead of the car going on sale in the UK in March 2017. Called the 530e iPerformance saloon, prices for the new car will start at £43,985.

BMW claims that the new model is capable of returning 141.2mpg and emitting 46g/km of CO2, which places it in the lowest 2016/17 Benefit in Kind tax bracket of 7%.

The 530e is powered by a 184hp turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that's supplemented by a 95hp electric motor - the same combination that powers the smaller 330e PHEV. Lithium-ion batteries located underneath the rear seats supply the electric motor with electricity.

Official figures suggest that the 530e will be capable of travelling up to 29 miles on battery power alone, while its batteries can be charged fully in under five hours from a domestic plug. This drops to under three hours when using a more powerful wall-mounted charger unit.

The 530e allows the driver to choose how much of the battery capacity they want to use, with the target value able to be adjusted to between 30 and 100% of a full charge. This allows that proportion of the battery's power to be reserved for all-electric motoring.

Inside, like the rest of the 5-series range, the 530e features the same 10.2-inch infotainment system which houses the navigation, telephone and entertainment functions.

BMW also claims it is the first car maker to offer Microsoft Outlook user a server connection to exchange and edit emails whilst on the move thanks to a built-in email function.

Like the rest of the BMW 5-series saloon range, the new 530e iPerformance saloon will make its public debut at the 2017 Detroit Motor Show in January.
