BMW ends Access to i3 electric car-swap points scheme

BMW has quietly dropped its Access points scheme for i3 drivers, which enabled them to swap their electric car for a conventional petrol or diesel vehicle for longer journeys.
The scheme, which cost from £40 per month and allowed points to be swapped for up to seven days' use of a bigger and longer-range conventionally engined BMW. The scheme was much-trumpeted at launch as offering a complete solution for city drivers who sometimes needed to go further afield, but it suffered from poor take-up.
"The Access element of some of the original packages we had offered has now been withdrawn," a BMW spokesman confirmed to BusinessCar. "The reason is rather straightforward: apparently, all the customer research says people loved the idea and thought it progressive, but very few actually signed on the dotted line and went ahead. There has to be a business reason for these things to exist and maybe we are just too ahead of our time.
"When more people get used to the sharing economy and monthly rates for mobility, instead of 'their' one and only car, then this could be looked to be reintroduced."
