Budget 2016: Smoother route for autonomous vehicles

Date: 16 March 2016   |   Author:

Chancellor George Osborne confirmed a range of measures to help the introduction of autonomous vehicles in the UK in his 2016 Budget documentation.

These included that driverless car trials will begin on the strategic road network by 2017, as well as truck platooning - where a number of trucks follow closely together, led by the front vehicle.

The Govenrment has also pledged to consult this summer on "sweeping away regulatory barriers within this parliament to enable autonomous vehicles on England's major roads", and it is also to set up a £15m "connected corridor" between London and Dover to enable vehicles to communicate wirelessly with infrastructure and potentially other vehicles.
