Businesses urged to make regular drink-drive checks

Date: 28 January 2016   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Businesses should do more to protect the public from drink drivers by being more rigorous with alcohol and drug testing policies, a breathaliser and alcohol-testing specialist said.

According to AlcoDigital, drug and alcohol use costs businesses more than £6bn a year in lost productivity, and in 2014, alcohol accounted for 5640 accidents and 8320 casualties on UK roads.

"In the UK there is no legal requirement for employing organisations to implement alcohol policies," said Suzannah Robin, alcohol and drug safety expert at AlcoDigital. "We work with numerous companies in many different industry sectors that already operate robust alcohol and drug policies."

However many more companies, particularly those in the transport industry or those operating heavy machinery, need to do more to improve standards not just for the safety of their employees but to protect the general public as well," she added.
