BVRLA creates connected car best practice guide

Date: 17 June 2016   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

The BVRLA has published a best practice guide to help support its members when dealing with connected vehicles.

Entitled Data Principals: A Statement of Best Practices, the guide covers personal data, vehicle-specific data, asset security and provision of predicative maintenance and service notifications.

As well as the guide being endorsed by the rental body, Leaseurope, a trade body representing the leasing and rental industry in Europe, is also adopting the guide.

The publication comes after the group's data group met with regulators to discuss its role when advising companies on safe capture and deletion of data in the future.

So far this year, the BVRLA has engaged with a number of manufacturers, trade bodies and technology providers, as well as policymakers from the Department for Business, the Department for Transport and the Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles, while the organisation hopes to discuss the issue with the Information Commissioner's Office.

"Connected vehicles give vehicle rental and leasing companies a tremendous opportunity to work more closely with their customers, thereby enabling them to minimise their repair costs, optimise their performance and maximise the utilisation of their vehicles," said Gerry Keaney, BVRLA chief executive. "The key to unlocking these benefits is data, and our industry is working collaboratively to ensure members have access to the data from connected vehicles in a fair, compliant and secure manner."
