Charging reliability issues hampering EV adoption among fleets

Date: 02 December 2016   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

The slow growth of electric charging networks combined with a high number of broken points is impacting electric vehicle uptake among fleets, a director of an EV charging company has claimed.

According to James O'Neill, UK director of Chago, many chargers are out of order thanks to a lack of maintenance.

O'Neill said this makes it frustrating for those who use public networks and own zero-emission vehicles.

According to the Chago boss this will need to change if fleets are to embrace EVs and add them onto their choice-lists.

Chago claimed it takes a different approach to many of its rivals by using high-quality components to improve the reliability of its points, reducing the amount of downtime.

The Finnish headquartered company also said it can save fleet managers time by allowing them to access live data to see where vehicles are being charged, as opposed to generating historic monthly reports on charging activity.

O'Neill also said he expects charging point numbers to increase in the coming years thanks to recent funding from the Government:

"We believe that over the next one to two years the charging infrastructure will grow more rapidly than at any other time in history. Funding seems to have been freed up, including the £7.5m workplace charging scheme, and everyone is realising that the slow growth of the charging infrastructure over the past five years has hampered further growth in EV sales."
