Consultation opens on new Thames crossing

Date: 26 January 2016   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Highways England has opened an eight-week consultation on a new tunnel to cross the river Thames, which the Government department said would relive congestion at the Dartford Crossing.

The proposed new tunnel would run from the end of the M2 motorway in Kent, crossing the river near Gravesend in Kent and Tilbury in Essex, and joining the M25 between junctions 29 and 30.

Highways England said the tunnel would be the first new crossing in 25 years, and would add £7bn to the UK's economy.

The consultation will run until Thursday 24 March, and the Government will make a final decision by the end of this year.

"Roads are key to ensuring the nation's prosperity. As part of our long-term economic plan, we are making the biggest investment in roads in a generation," said roads minster Andrew Jones. "The Government is committed to delivering a Lower Thames Crossing which will increase capacity and provide better, faster journeys across the Thames."
