Council set to save £100,000 after switching to car-sharing scheme

A local Government authority has announced it is on track to save £100,000 a year on staff travel costs after switching to a car-sharing scheme at the start of this year.

In January, Windsor and Maidenhead Council replaced its pool car fleet with 13 keyless-entry Mini Coopers, supplied through leasing company Alphabet.

The council said the addition of the shared vehicles allows it to offer its employees flexible, on-demand transport while reducing its grey fleet usage.

Following consultations with the mobility company, the council took delivery of the 13 vehicles, which replaced seven diesel hatchbacks and two four-year old electric vehicles.

It predicted that staff would prefer to drive the Minis over their own vehicles. According to the council, more than 200 staff members have joined the scheme and each vehicle has an average of 16 users, while the council claims the move to a car-sharing scheme has reduced its administration overhead for car travel by 90%.

"This scheme has offered our employees a practical alternative to a pool car. For us, car sharing is the most cost-effective way to help our people travel to meetings and carry out their day-to-day jobs," said Mark Green, fleet manager at Windsor and Maidenhead Council. "Alphabet has been with us every step of the way, from our initial conversations about whether AlphaCity [Alphabet's car-sharing service] is right for us, through to educating our team in how to use the on-board technology."
