Depot manager jailed after stealing £250,000 from SHB

Date: 13 April 2016   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

An SHB Hire depot manager from Exeter has been jailed for 30 months after admitting fraud following swindling almost a quarter of a million pounds from the rental giant.

Michael Melhuish sold 23 ex-fleet vehicles, and offloadeed another 28 at cut prices to a third-party dealer and spli the profits.

According to Exeter Crown Court, the former hire centre boss falsified part-exchange records in order to sell the vehicles and keep the proceeds - including a Land Rover Defender for himself.

Senior managers from the rental giant investigated the running of the branch after spotting a vehicle for sale in Sidmouth, East Devon.

"Over a period of 14 months when you were in a position of trust as depot manager, you stole close to quarter of a million pounds," said Judge Graham Cottle at Exeter Crown Court. "You did so in various ways by falsifying accounts, stealing and selling vehicles, undervaluing them and taking vehicles in part exchange which went missing."

"It is not clear what your purpose was. You put some money in a bank account and paid large sums in buying lottery tickets in the hope of winning enough to put matters right. You took out a gym membership and spent money on bicycles," he added.

SHB Hire refused to comment when approached by BusinessCar.
