Distracted drivers pose biggest threat on UK roads, survey reveals

Speeding drivers and those who are distracted while driving are considered to be the biggest threat to motorists in the UK, a new survey has revealed.
Complied by road safety charity Brake, insurance giant Aviva and opticians Specsavers, the poll of 1,000 motorists found that just over four out of 10 drivers (41%) thought that distracted drivers posed the biggest danger to other road users.
More than a third (35%), meanwhile, said that those who speed are the largest threat to those on the roads, followed by drink- and/or drug-drivers (18%).
Just 3% of those who were polled believe that vehicle emissions posed the greatest hazard on the roads, and 1% said those not wearing seatbelts are considered to be the biggest danger to other drivers
The survey also asked motorists which risks they have taken on the roads, with almost two-thirds (63%) of those quizzed confessing to speeding, while 13% said they have driven while distracted and a further 9% said they have not worn a seatbelt.
"Our survey shows that drivers are aware of the threat of risky behaviour by other drivers, but are inclined to play down the riskiness of their own behaviours," said Gary Rae, director of communications and campaigns for Brake.
