EV registrations to outnumber petrol and diesel sales by 2027

More than half of all new car registrations could be electric by 2027, industry analysts have predicted.
According to data from Go Ultra Low - a Government-backed consortium of green car makers - electric vehicles could be the dominant form of propulsion in 11 years time, with more than 1.3 million registrations each year.
The group arrived at this forecast after collating data from a number of EV sales reports, including those from the Government, the RAC Foundation and motoring media, adding that a Government plan for all new cars and vans to have ultra-low emissions (under 75g/km of CO2) by 2040 is on track to be met.
Last year, 28,000 plug-in hybrid vehicles were registered, while the consortium claims that so far this year a new plug-in vehicle has been sold every 13 minutes.
"The huge interest in electric vehicles and their subsequent rapid rise in uptake has been spectacular so far, with more than 60,000 EVs registered in the past five years," said Poppy Welch, head of Go Ultra Low. "These rises are just the start of the electric revolution as Go Ultra Low analysis suggests that electric vehicles could dominate the new car market as early as 2027."
