Fiat launches Tipo with sub-90g/km fleet-spec model

Date: 26 July 2016   |   Author: Guy Bird

Fiat's return to the Focus-dominated compact hatchback and estate market will be boosted by a UK business-spec Tipo model this September.

Colour satnav, autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and an 89g/km CO2 figure are among the suite of fleet-focused items above and beyond the mid-range trim. Available only on the 120hp 1.6 diesel and offering an official 83.1mpg, it is expected to represent 20% of total UK sales and will cost £16,995 in manual guise (£17,995 for the dual-clutch).

Some 3300 units have been earmarked for the UK to the end of 2016, with 12,000 or more in the following full year, of which 45% are expected to go to fleet. The split between five-door and Station Wagon versions is predicted to be 80/20 in favour of the hatchback, and although a low-spec four-door version is already on sale in parts of continental Europe, there are no plans to bring it to the UK.

Built in Fiat's Turkish plant, Federico Rosasco, the UK's Tipo product manager, told BusinessCar: "The quality of the manufacturing there is really high so we won't be afraid of comparison with rivals like the [Hyundai] i30 and [Kia] Ceed. And with no new [Fiat] Punto coming, the Tipo gives those customers somewhere to go too."
