MG has unveiled its new GS crossover at the London motor show ahead of it going on sale next month.

Powered by the firm's 1.5-litre petrol engine, the new model joins the company's UK model range alongside the 3 supermini and upper medium 6.

Though no efficiency details have been announced yet, the engine produces 106hp, emits 124g/km of CO2 and returns 48.7mpg in the 3, however due to the GS's larger size expect the final figures to be higher.

Pricing and efficiency information will be announced on 14 June. The entry level 3 supermini costs from £8399, undercutting several of its rivals, so expect the GS to be priced keenly priced against its rivals.

MG also confirmed the GS would feature the firm's first automatic transmission.

"When considering transmissions and engine choices, we listened to our customers and looked at market trends," said Matthew Cheyne, head of sales marketing for MG. "It is also a significant moment to announce our first automatic - something many of our customers have been waiting for, and so we're thrilled to be offering it to them."

The first customer cars will hit UK roads by the end of next month.
