Hyundai has released two images of its Ioniq five-door hatchback, which will be powered by hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric powertrains.

The South Korean car maker has also revealed details of the hybrid powertrain, which will be the first version to come to market.

This version will feature a 105hp 1.6-litre petrol engine, mated to a 47hp electric motor. Hyundai has not revealed any CO2 or mpg details yet, but says the car will have class-leading fuel economy figures, which is likely to mean a Prius-beating sub-70g/km CO2 figure and more than 94.2 mpg.

"The Ioniq embodies Hyundai's new thinking and bold ambitions for the future. This world-class dedicated hybrid will be the starting point of our future mobility," said Rag Jung, head of the project management division at Hyundai.

The vehicle is set to make its European debut at the Geneva motor show in March, and will be launched in the UK in the final quarter of the year.
