Maserati has revealed its long-awaited 4x4, the Levante, ahead of its debut at the Geneva motor show next month.

The production SUV follows on from the 2011 Kubang concept, which first signaled the Italian firm's intention to build an off-roader.

Maserati has confirmed the new model will be powered by both petrol and diesel engines, but has not given any further details. It is likely that the Levante will feature the firm's 275hp 3.0-litre diesel unit, which currently powers the Ghibli.

In the Ghibli, the engine returns 47.9mpg and emits 158g/km of CO2, with the Levante off-roader likely to trail these figures slightly.

These engines will be mated to a four-wheel-drive system and an eight-speed automatic gearbox, which Maserati claims has been calibrated for the new SUV.

The car is due to go on sale in the UK this spring. Prices are yet to be confirmed.
