Mercedes-Benz has revealed the 10th generation of its E-class upper medium saloon at the Detroit motor show ahead of its arrival in showrooms in the UK this summer.

At launch, the E-class will be powered by two engines: a 184hp 2.0-litre petrol model, badged E200, and a 195hp 2.0-litre diesel unit branded E200d.

The diesel engine will emit 102g/km of CO2, placing it in the 20% BIK band in 2016/17. The petrol engine, meanwhile, will emit 132g/km of CO2, placing it in the 23% BIK bracket.

Both models will be equipped with the company's nine-speed automatic gearbox as standard.
Other variants, including a plug-in hybrid emitting just 44g/km of CO2, will be added to the range after the market launch.

Three trim levels will be offered - Exclusive, Avantgarde and AMG Line.

Inside, buttons on the steering wheel now allows the driver to control the media system with finger swipes like on a smartphone, while the centre console-mounted touchpad can recognise handwriting.

Meanwhile, standard safety equipment includes the firm's Active Brake Assist feature, which warns the driver of impending hazards and can automatically apply the brakes when necessary.

Mercedes' Attention Assist function will also be offered as standard, which warns drivers of tiredness and inattentiveness.

New equipment also includes a smartphone app that allows the driver to remotely park the vehicle, and car-to-car communication to boost safety, while the driver's smartphone can be used as a vehicle key using near-field communication technology.

The E-class is also offered with optional driver assistance kit. Its main features are the 'Drive Pilot' active cruise control system, which operates up to 130mph and an expanded active brake-assist feature that can detect crossing traffic at junctions and apply the brakes autonomously.
