Toyota has revealed the second-generation of its plug-in Prius model at the New York motor show.

It is due to go on sale by the end of the year, and the manufacturer claimed it is capable of returning 202mpg - the best fuel efficiency of any plug-in hybrid currently on the market - and 32g/km of CO2.

Toyota said the car could travel for up to 31 miles and at speeds of up to 84mph in its fully-electric mode, while it is estimated that it will take around two hours 20 minutes to recharge the batteries.

The plug-in hybrid now features a larger 8.8kW/h battery pack, which results in double the range over the previous generation model.

The new model is 165mm longer, 15mm wider and sits 20mm lower than the existing model, while the weight of the vehicle has "been kept to a mininum" thanks to the use of lightweight materials, including carbon fibre.

Inside, the plug-in model features an eight-inch touchscreen, while the instrument cluster has two 4.2-inch screens vehicle information.

Technology-wise, the Prius features LED headlights, a solar roof charging system - the first time it will be included on a production Toyota after being shown on a concept car in 2010 - a wireless phone charging tray beneath the centre console and a head-up display.

The Prius Plug-in will be offered with Toyota Safety Sense, equipping it with integrated active safety and driver assistance functions including a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection and autonomous emergency braking; lane departure alert with steering assist; full-speed adaptive cruise control with full stop technology; and automatic high beam headlights. A blind spot monitor and rear cross traffic alert will also be available.
