Fleets told to clamp down on mobile phone use

Road safety charity Brake has called on fleet operators to crack down on mobile phone use behind the wheel.
It follows on from its annual Fleet Safety Survey, which found that just under 40% (37.9%) of respondents said they have company-wide policies that ban employees from using mobiles while driving.
The survey also revealed that fewer than one in 10 fleets (7.6%) prioritise the environmental impact when making new vehicle choices, while 11.7% said car safety ratings is their top priority when choosing new wheels.
Meanwhile, just a third of respondents said they require full eyesight tests for staff that drive for work, or proof they have recently undertaken an eye test.
Furthermore, three out of 10 fleets don't provide training to drivers on how to stay within legal speed limits.
"This year's fleet safety survey gives a really great snapshot of the policies and procedures that fleets have in place to manage these areas of risk," said Ellie Pearson, professional engagement manager at Brake. "I'd urge fleet operators to see how their company measures up compared to our survey respondents, and to identify the areas of road risk management where they can improve their practices."
