Ford states ambition to become four-wheel drive market leader

Date: 09 March 2016   |   Author:

Ford has declared its target of becoming the four-wheel drive market leader, both in terms of technology and volume.

The company is about to launch all-wheel drive versions of the S-max, Galaxy and Mondeo models, as well as a new larger off-roader in the form of the Edge, while the new Focus RS performance car also employs four-wheel drive technology for performance rather than off-road ability reasons.

"Worldwide I would suggest that yes, we intend to become the segment leader, and in Europe we are heading in a good direction as well," said Ford's chief engineer for large cars Matthias Tonn. "While most drivers don't need to cope with difficult and challenging terrain, they want to feel secure, so those that can offer four-wheel drive are sure to be in the consideration of these clients."

Ford of Britain sales director Kevin Griffin said the new Galaxy 4x4 could open up opportunities for people that have moved towards SUVs. "With the Galaxy, we occupy the seven-seat space very well, and now with intelligent all-wheel drive coming through we've got consumers that would have bought a seven seat off-roader and it's a great opportunity to sell to those guys."
