Geneva motor show: Most interesting models -Part 2

Date: 04 March 2016

The first big European motor show of 2016 was a chance for the world's most important carmakers to grab a bit of the spotlight, and it was a show with plenty going on. Paul Barker, Christofer Lloyd and Tristan Young guide you through the 20 key fleet stories of the event.

Skoda VisionS

15. Skoda Concept

What's the story?

Although it's a concept car, Skoda has a strong history of turning these into production models with minimal styling changes, and the VisionS is almost certain to become a rival to the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento.

Timescale?

The production version, expected to be called Kodiak, should launch in Q1 2017.

Why is it interesting?

Five- or seven-seat versions will be on offer, and this car is designed as the next step, after the new Superb, in Skoda's attempt to insert more emotional appeal into its products.

Any other business?

The VisionS is powered by a petrol-electric plug-in hybrid powertrain, with Skoda quoting 45g/km, and it also says the car will be a typical Skoda in terms of class-leading amounts of space and the company's 'simply clever' features.

Honda Civic concept

14. Civic

What's the story?

The Honda Civic concept previews the direction of the 10th-generation Civic hatchback, which is set to arrive in Europe next year and is being billed by the Japanese manufacturer as the sportiest Civic ever. The new model boasts bold, sharp lines and measures in at 130mm longer, 30mm wider and 20mm lower than the current car, with larger, wider wheels adding to the car's aggressive stance on the road

Timescale?

The new Civic is scheduled to arrive in early 2017.

Why is it interesting?

The Civic has been an easy car to forget in the lower medium class, against rivals including the Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra and VW Golf; however, the new concept is much more memorable, growing in size and visual drama. A range of new turbocharged petrol engines should feature in the Civic, including frugal 1.0-litre and 1.5-litre units.

Any other business?

Designed for the European market, the new Civic is set to be produced in the UK and exported to global markets including the US.

Vans (in minibus form!)

13. Vans1

What's the story?

Geneva gave a first glimpse of the new trio of medium vans from Citroen, Peugeot and Toyota, although only in premium people-carrying guise as the Citroen SpaceTourer, Peugeot Traveller (pictured, above) and Toyota Proace Verso. Van versions will follow in the next few weeks under the Dispatch, Expert and Proace names respectively.

Timescale?

All three hit the UK in late summer, in van and people-carrier form.

Why is it interesting?

While the vans are likely to be of bigger volume interest, they won't be revealed to the public until next month's CV Show in Birmingham. In the meantime, the three manufacturers used Geneva to reveal the passenger versions, which will be aimed at the family, VIP and hotel shuttle markets thanks to a variety of seat configurations.

Any other business?

There are three body lengths for the new, jointly developed models, and there will be up to five engine and transmission alternatives.

Volvo V90

12. Volvo V90

What's the story?

Volvo's new big estate joins its previously revealed S90 sibling, sitting alongside the XC90 SUV range-topper.

Timescale?

The S90 arrives in the UK by August, a few weeks ahead of the estate.

Why is it interesting?

Volvo's resurgence finally gets to its large saloon and estate. Improved connectivity, functionality and design join the traditional Volvo strengths of practicality and comfort. The line-up will contain two diesels - the D4 and D5 units - and the T8 plug-in hybrid.

Any other business?

The T8 plug-in hybrid models of both the S90 and V90 arrives early next year, with the saloon quoted at 44g/km and the estate at 49g/km.

VW T-cross Breeze

11. VW T-Cross

What's the story?

The constant quest to fill more niches sees VW look at an off-roader to sit below the new Tiguan, which launches in late spring.

The company has declared it will offer an SUV in every segment, which means this model is heading for launch, along with another bigger brother fitting between this Polo-based car and the Tiguan.

Timescale?

The production version, as a regular model rather than a convertible, should be on sale in 2018.

Why is it interesting?

At 4077mm, the concept car is 105mm longer than a Polo and 58mm shy of a Nissan Juke, itself one of the smallest cars in the compact crossover class. It is powered by a 110hp 1.0-litre TSI turbo-petrol engine, with claimed emissions of 115g/km.

Any other business?

Volkswagen also unveiled the facelifted Up model, headlined by a new 90hp petrol engine. First cars arrive in September.
