Government launches fleet policy consultations

Date: 11 August 2016   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

Three consultations on areas of tax policy that may affect the fleet sector in the future have been launched by the Government.

HMRC and the Treasury are looking to re-evaluate ultra-low emission vehicle company car tax bands, while trying not to disincentive fleets that may consider choosing a ultra-low emission vehicle as a company vehicle in the future.

Policymakers are also considering limiting the income tax and national insurance contribution advantages which are available through salary sacrifice schemes. Meanwhile, the Government is looking for views on how new lease accounting rules will impact the tax treatment of leased assets, such as vehicles, and how tax rules will need to change.

The consultations end on 20 October, and can be found here.

Responding to these publication of the consultations, the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association "welcomed the clarity these consultations provide on the Government's policy positions" and said it will work on with its members  "to ensure the fleet industry's views are properly represented".
